The following is taken from a letter sent by the Medicines Control Agency to Dr Tony Delamothe (Web Editor, bmj.com) in relation to the advertising of medicines on the Internet, dates September 1998.

"Where a journal, whether published or posted on a Internet web site, is intended "wholly or mainly" for health professionals, the advertising material is assumed to be directed at persons qualified to prescribe or supply medicines and should therefore comply with Part IV of the Advertising Regulations although it may be accessed by the general public. Just as we would not require libraries to remove advertising material from journals available to the general public we would have no objection to the BMJ being posted on the Internet in its entirety."
